What to Look For in a Pearl

A Freshwater Pearl is a delicate gem made from the nacre of a mollusk. Although the process is similar to making a saltwater pearl, the differences are many and varied. The main difference between saltwater and freshwater pearls is the core size of each type. A freshwater pearl has a much larger range of colors and shapes, with the round variety being the most popular. Traditionally, freshwater pearls were less popular because of their inferior nacre coating and shape. Now, however, there are many different kinds of these treasures available to those who want them.

There are two main types of freshwater pearls. One type is tissue nucleated, which means that it does not contain any bead nuclei. The other is all nacre. These are not typically perfectly round, and ninety percent of the harvest are not perfectly round. Therefore, the price of a Freshwater Pearl will depend on the number of blemishes and how smooth they are. To determine the quality and price of a freshwater pearl, you need to know what to look for in a pearl.

Freshwater pearls range in size from 2.0 - 3.0 mm to 11.0 mm. Some can be larger, but the most common size range is 6.0 - 7.0 mm. In addition to that, the freshwater pearl's color will depend on the dye used to enhance it. While dyeing is acceptable, you should ask the jeweler if the dyeing process is disclosed. Otherwise, you may have to settle for less expensive freshwater pearls.

The color of a freshwater pearl is determined by refraction and the chemical reaction between the mussel's mantle tissue and ambient light. The most effective way to judge the color of a Freshwater Pearl is with the ambient light. The Japanese once dominated the international pearl industry, but a small number of Chinese companies have flooded the market in recent years. They have largely replaced the American and European companies and have a global presence.

Freshwater pearls range in size from two to twelve mm. Some pearls can be larger than this. While they are inexpensive, freshwater pearls are often dyed to make them more attractive and appealing. For this reason, it is essential to ask the jeweler before buying a pearl. If he or she does, they should disclose the process. The dye will alter the color and texture of the pearl, but will not affect its quality.

Since freshwater pearls come in many colors, it is important to note that the main body color is white. A good quality freshwater pearl will have overtones of green, blue, and pink. A lower quality freshwater pearl will not have these overtones. The most common varieties are white, cream, and lavender, but black and Tahitian pearls are naturally charcoal to black. It is not uncommon for a pearl to be dyed, and the process will vary from pearl to shell.
