'Reaching Nova' Album Review

When you listen to the new album Reaching Nova, by New York hiphop artist Dot Da Genius you might just think it's another hip hop album rehashed by a famous rapper from back in the day. But that's not necessarily true. Dot Da Genius has made his debut into the competitive world of hip hop with this new album. The album is full of bangers and solidifying hits like "Light It Up" and the fizzy, "amins".

Now for those who are unfamiliar with Dot Da Genius (Dogg) have been putting out hip hop albums since 1998. I'm still not that familiar but he has always had an ear for what people like and what doesn't when it comes to music. And I'm sure you can tell from the name of the album that this album is no different. He takes what we all know and do: put it on wax. No Jusuru or any other watered down version of hip hop.

But there is more than that. He mixes beats from reggae, hip hop, jazz, and lots of other genre's to make Reaching Nova a unique and exciting hiphop album. He has also gained some rare and special notoriety from being on the cover of Rolling Stone, which is quite an accomplishment for an up and coming hiphop artist. It also shows he is a serious hiphop head and not just some goofy artist just trying to cash in on the fad. And that is definitely right on target!

This is definitely a positive album in many ways because it makes me excited to hear Dot talk about his music. I mean it is still hiphop, but it's more relaxed and not as uptight as some of his former projects. He lets the lyrics flow naturally and that's always a good thing. People like when hiphop artists are not too uptight about certain things and don't try to sound like they're giving a speech at a poetry slam. It's more personal.

That being said, I would not call this a great album. While it contains some good songs and is entertaining to listen to, the quality of Dot's rapping is very poor in my opinion. The production on this album is really not impressive at all. It sounds like it was done by someone who wasn't a professional rapping artist. Really, how much experience does someone need to come up with decent lyrics? He might have had a handful of hits, but none were memorable to me. Above all, I think this is a song that you should not pay any money for. If you are looking for a song to listen to with your loved ones while you are watching television, that's great. If you are a hiphop fan, a little experience with an artist such as Dot Da Genius will help you understand the genre a bit better. Reaching Nova will not do that. Just keep your ears open and you will eventually hear a great hiphop album.
