Legend has it that a young daughter of the King of Kashi (the name which translates to mean "one who is blessed") fell in love with a cow and got pregnant. Her father refused to allow her to marry the Cowherd because of her status as a cattle seller. She then sought to win her true love by promising to help his people.
To perform the ritual to win the love of the king, the cowherd put a golden cow into a fathom and prayed to be granted her wishes. This was a test of faith from the start because no such cow existed in Fengshan. This was because it was a ritualistic act which only the royalties of that area could perform. After this, they offered the cow and its products to the gods of Fengshan as a symbol of good luck. This act signified that they were to gain wealth and prosperity in the coming year.
Because of the importance of the cow and its products, the Fengshan royalty always had a plentiful supply of them. This explains why they are known to be generous people. Legend has it that, the God of wealth, wishing to please the cowherd of Fengshan, presented her with a fawning daughter. There are many stories about Link and his works like the Perfume and Fortune and other books of the same genre. This is why he is also known as the progenitor of the present day Purna-Mala tradition. According to Yatiwit, the great mala master of modern Malaysia, the essence of Link's work is to channel the energy of rhythm and pulse for all good and beneficial purposes. The word "dengan" means "a string of beads" but according to Yatiwit, it also refers to a spiritual being or a "being of light".
